Middle-Earth seems like it’s a pretty happening place: plenty of exotic locales to explore, elves handing out gifts, trees to ride when your footses ache, and treasure available only to those courageous enough to take it. If it ever existed in a Tolkien novel or note, then Jian has probably drawn it: his jaw-droppingly resplendent masterpieces tell just as enthralling a story as the novels they emulate… though in considerably fewer words. It occurred to me, upon reading this article, that without even knowing it, I have done the impossible: I have married Mr. Darcy.

He, a proud, Texan, Pentecostal pastor’s son. She, a bookish introvert from an inferior social class, only pretty when seen through the eyes of someone who loves her. I am amazed by the caring, empathetic man he’s becoming, but Ryan’s still thoroughly Darcy. Devilishly handsome & clever, he will always make me weak at the knees.

2012 has been a whirlwind of a year with many blessings, bittersweet moments, and surprises. We find ourselves newlywed and living a thousand miles away from our families. And, by God’s good grace, we’re content, at long last.

I’ll be snuggling up on our $13 couch tonight with my Darcy, our puppy, and a cheap bottle of sparkling cider. Lots of love from us to you. Here’s to 2013!

My Thoughts on Star Wars and Disney

My initial reaction was diluted by the amount of information we got in October. Lucasfilm was bought by Disney and George Lucas wrote a treatment for 3 MORE STAR WARS MOVIES. Sorry. I didn’t mean to yell. That little fact, is actually the one that I’ve had the hardest time getting my head around. But I think I’ve got it square now.

So, let’s talk Disney. Disney is a giant corporation. They own a tremendous amount of media, many of which don’t have the Disney branding (things like ABC, Miramax, ESPN, and the History Channel. Oh, and Marvel). And like any major corporation they’re going to do everything they can to make sure Star Wars and its characters are fully saturated into pop culture (as if they weren’t already). They’re also going to make sure that we get regular injections of Star Wars movies. So they can maximize profits.

Lucasfilm was always a kind of scrappy underdog. Saying “scrappy underdog” might sound weird for a company that has only produced blockbuster films, but they were. At their core the Lucasfilm made independent films financed out of pocket by the producer/director. You don’t get any more independent than that. Fox distributed Star Wars, but they didn’t pay a dime to make them. George Lucas made the prequels exactly how he wanted them and was beholden to no one. That’s impressive.

Alton Brown is a spice range for blind and visually impaired people. The range also includes olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Together with liquids a special spoon is provided which makes it easier to pour and to measure them, it’s the measure of a table spoon. The text is placed on the exact same place on all the products and all the Braille is embossed. The logo is communicating the exact same thing for blind as for non blinds since A is one dot and B is two.

This is absolutely outstanding design, and it makes me happy that this is happening in general.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm For 4 Billion Dollars

This is crazy. Disney just purchased Lucasfilm and now owns Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Disney isn’t wasting any time with this properties. They also announced that Star Wars Episode 7 is coming in 2015. I’ll repeat that.

STAR WARS EPISODE 7 IS COMING IN 2015!!

That’s kind of insane to me. Are we starting a new character arc? We already saw the rise, fall, and redemption of Anakin Skywalker. Are we ignoring the EU? Worse, are we adapting the EU? There are a thousand questions.

George Lucas said in the press release:

“It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers.

Be as snarky as you want. Say, “he should have passed it on before he made the prequels” but deep down inside you know that you (and I) will have a really hard time trusting anyone, anyone else with Star Wars.

UPDATE: I have opinions, and I’m going to write them down. I just need to gather some information before I commit them to paper… er… blog. Hopefully I’ll have something by tonight/tomorrow. - Creighton
